FAQ
Why not have a standardized payment rate?
There is too much variation in experience, skill, and preference in different artists for us to set a standard rate of payment here. Please list out payment preferences most suitable for you when applying. The preferred payment artists receive is at their comfort and discretion, and will not have any weight when reviewing applications.

How are artists selected?
We will be hiring applicants who seem like a good fit for the team based on art style, past experience and skill level. All artists will be joining our team of creatives and taking on work that fits into their own schedule. We're looking to create a great team environment that will boost the creativity and variety of future site content.

What kind of hours are artists expected to work each month?
This is flexible for each artist, we have no minimums for work taken on each month. Essentially, artists will claim what they have time for in each project and manage their time independantly around our planned deadlines.

Will hired artists be drawing turnip-based items such as monthly sets?
No. We will not be hiring artists to draw items or content that directly generate revenue. All site artists will be working on free-to-play content such as new permanent items/pets, assets, and free seasonal content.

Why ask for a timezone?
This is to best coordinate scheduled things like deadlines. If selected, we will be getting in touch to discuss everything in further detail, as not everyone in the same timezone has the same active schedule.

When will my application be replied to?
Due to the potential volume of applications, we may not be able to reply to every application, but thank everyone in advance for their interest in the available positions! We will be emailing with additional questions where applicable.
Applications will remain open indefinitely until we assemble a full team.

Good luck in your search! Also a google form for the application would make your life a lot easier lol.

Why is everybody getting so freaked out about the turnips? All applicants will be over 18, so they can make their own choice about if they want money or turnips lol. This way they have more options, I don't see what there is to complain about.

People need to know how much their own time is worth and pick the right jobs that fit that requirement. If this is a side-gig, then the turnips option is fine. Otherwise, go for the RLC option or look elsewhere.

I sympathize the the general anti-turnip sentiment because many CS startups lowball/overwork new graduates and same with a lot of post-grad student jobs. I just don't think that DV has the same ill intentions.

Most of the questions I'm seeing are things that should commonly be asked for when being interviewed. Otherwise, the job listing would be too complicated. Remember that an interview isn't just for the employer, but also for the employee. You ask questions of the employer, too, and if you don't like their answers, you are not forced to accept their job offer. That's what an interview is for. If they put too much in the job listing, it would be overwhelming.

I understand many of you are young or not in the professional world, so I don't say this in anger. Yes, there are many questions, and some things in the listing could be worded differently, but demanding and in-depth explanation of the job's details is unrealistic. That's between employee and employer and between coworkers.

As for offering in turnips, it's been explained enough. It's a different work culture in browser games that have a premium currency. Plus, from reading it, it sounds like the job will be more part-time, side-gig type of hours. especially with the comment of budget and need. They AREN'T paying for your rent. In my experience, with asset work, you get sent concept art and you make the asset and with some tweaking as per the developer, you turn it in(It's more complicated but that's the tl;dr). So if they don't have the budget for a week or a need for anything that week... you go without being paid or making anything that week. This isn't a job to say any artist will be making a living on--as nice as that would be--and if someone wants this as a casual side job, for all we know, they could be using it to fund their time on the game and it's their right to choose such payment. It's up to the person being hired, leave it at that.

If I've said anything blatantly incorrect without realizing--i know my experience isn't universal--or others have other experience in asset creation, I'd be happy to hear another side. Unless you're actively aggressive, I'll happily talk more at length.

    Adding to my earlier comments:

If an applicant does not know average hours or know that the staff is AT LEAST flexible with them then it's going to be hard for the people having multiple jobs, who are stay at home parents, who are in school, etc. On any professional application they would give at least a ROUNDABOUT for what a normal day in office would look like or how they would go about working on a project.

This isn't something that breaks an NDA or goes against any in office TOS so it's important to have that information open and readily there incase someone has a messy schedule or on the off chance they'll need to have that flex for other things going on (such as a second job, classes, etc.) and I've seen comments saying that it shouldn't be available when it ABSOLUTELY SHOULD.

Even for the people who're not artists and who're at a 9 to 5 job get paid per hour and they know how much they're getting paid on the application or at the very least it's available on the site for the certain job title. So with that I'll go into the 'turnip payment' everyone's been going nuts about.

Consider it an OPTION. It's not a straight payment method as said in the original post BUT if the artist PREFERS turnips over payment then they will compensate of course. BUT I would suggest a HYBRID payment system if this is the case so the artist can still get paid with real currency and have that much stated on the original post to not have so many people on your throat about it.

Clarify what needs to be said or done and fix the mistakes, thank you.

What if no one who gets accepted takes the turnip option. Then was it ever really an option to begin with?
Sorry to shitpost, but I don't think simply having the option is a problem. I could see myself taking turnips if I got like 1.5 times the worth or something - or even as a partial. Yes, artists should be compensated monetarily for their work...so...they should request that. I hate to dog on the community, but we love to dog on dv at any turn and to go above and beyond with reactions.

Also I don't think many people were saying "this site did it so it's ok", I think they were just clarifying why anji would have this offer. The culture was like that on Ayways, so it's just what she knows. I'm only assuming, I could be wrong. But I think I've only seen one person actually say the quoted statement.

(Actually say - as in intend - not great with my words)

i may be assuming things here but i think the reason most people are worried about the whole 'you can choose whether to be paid in turnips or rlc' thing is that they may be concerned that their choice would factor into whether or not dv staff chose to hire them - the idea that 'oh we don't have enough budget for new artists to be paid with rlc? just hire the ones who want turnips'. of course i'm not going to say that's what staff are doing, because it would kinda be a wild assumption to make - we know very little of how things are run behind the scenes (nda's and all) which is fine, and how one would expect a petsite to be run. however if i were to apply for this position asking, i would be worried about my payment preference factoring into whether or not i am hired.

It's only a choice if no one applies for turnips. If you got two people of comparable skill/experience applying and one is willing to work for free, who do you think is going to be hired? Turnips is even listed before cash.

People bring up other sites, but DV isn't like the usual tiny forum site where staff doesn't make a profit/living off the place and is lucky if they can cover server costs+new assets each month. If the DV owner thinks they should be able to make a living off the site, than they should treat their employees, even freelance ones with equal respect.

???? why is payment in pixels even an option? you're not 12. the artists you're hiring are likewise not 12. in fact, you require them to be over 18. pay them in the money they need to exist as an adult????

also really confident no-one should be trusting their real actual identity to the people running this site, based on past behaviour.
  • Villager Antimoany (#1096) 23 Jul 2021, 3:07 am
^^^^ please disregard my "past behaviour" remark i got my wires crossed and confused the people running dappervolk with the people running a different petsite.

Copy and pasting this from the forums because this is so sketchy and you artists deserve so much better!

Dappervolk has always been consistently unprofessional, which is probably the only consistent thing about this site anymore. But this is really a new low.

There is literally zero reason to offer this has an option. If your artists want turnips CRAZY idea but they can buy turnips from the site with the REAL money you're paying them. Turnips are so hilariously worthless since you refuse to make them tradable so you're literally just saying that you're willing to give your artists monopoly money to work for you.

The reponse from the devs I'm expecting goes something like this, "When we were younger, we used to work for sites that we loved and they took advantage of that love to underpay and underappreciate us. We're very nostalgic for this and that's why we decided to make it an option for you too to experience. :)"

Need not apply, folks! Dappervolk doesn't deserve your hard work if they're clearly not wanting to pay you fairly.
  • Villager Brightwinged (#9237) 23 Jul 2021, 12:35 pm
Please, please pay your artists in actual money.
  • Villager Zelda (#28) 23 Jul 2021, 2:49 pm
uselesslesbian (#5081) "whether or not dv staff chose to hire them - the idea that 'oh we don't have enough budget for new artists to be paid with rlc? just hire the ones who want turnips"
Absolutely agree, I actually thought this, too, but...forgot about it while reading comments. I am definitely giving the devs the benefit of the doubt that this *won't* be a contributing factor whatsoever, but that is painfully optimistic.

Krissim (#36) I wanted to say how it was definitely peculiar that they listed turnips before RLC. I didn't want to include that in my message since I felt like it was so minor and my post was already tl;dr lmao. I even daydreamed about how I would have worded it.
"Artists will be paid with RLC, but can alternatively be paid in turnips if they really want to", something like that lol.
