FAQ
Why not have a standardized payment rate?
There is too much variation in experience, skill, and preference in different artists for us to set a standard rate of payment here. Please list out payment preferences most suitable for you when applying. The preferred payment artists receive is at their comfort and discretion, and will not have any weight when reviewing applications.

How are artists selected?
We will be hiring applicants who seem like a good fit for the team based on art style, past experience and skill level. All artists will be joining our team of creatives and taking on work that fits into their own schedule. We're looking to create a great team environment that will boost the creativity and variety of future site content.

What kind of hours are artists expected to work each month?
This is flexible for each artist, we have no minimums for work taken on each month. Essentially, artists will claim what they have time for in each project and manage their time independantly around our planned deadlines.

Will hired artists be drawing turnip-based items such as monthly sets?
No. We will not be hiring artists to draw items or content that directly generate revenue. All site artists will be working on free-to-play content such as new permanent items/pets, assets, and free seasonal content.

Why ask for a timezone?
This is to best coordinate scheduled things like deadlines. If selected, we will be getting in touch to discuss everything in further detail, as not everyone in the same timezone has the same active schedule.

When will my application be replied to?
Due to the potential volume of applications, we may not be able to reply to every application, but thank everyone in advance for their interest in the available positions! We will be emailing with additional questions where applicable.
Applications will remain open indefinitely until we assemble a full team.

It is actually extremely standard for pet and avatar websites to compensate staff with the equivalent amount of premium currency instead of real money, sometimes with the promise of switching everyone over to real money once more profits are flowing in, but sometimes no options or suggestions of a real money option at all. As dour as it sounds the fact that one has a choice is better than other VPS I've seen.
Ideally like this wouldn't be a thing and I wouldn't be so immune to seeing this to the point where im like "oh wow the OPTION of getting paid real currency? hot dog!" but its a symptom of the genre... However forums like VPL and TGL have done wonders in helping push a shift to artists, writers, and coders getting paid on petsites specifically by having a community where everyone can showcase their work and rates. Though many petsites remain passion projects with little to no startup money so I'm not sure if this style of more pro-bono or voucher based work will ever truly go away.
Oh, and, also while this is more of a niche situation but some countries are a bit iffy with paypal or other similar websites, so paying via premium site currency can be the only option for some ppl. But that's more of a fun fact than anything.

On the top of paying people with turnips, this is common practice on sites like this, as the site has some users who are too young to run their own paypal and would still like to be reimbursed for their time. It's something most if not all pet sites I've been on have applied to their applications.

Just sent in my application and I wish all my friends, peers, and fellow Volkians luck. :3 Fingers crossed.

    er, topic.*

Stigs (#4019) The requirements of the application include being over 18, so all artists being hired would be old enough to have a Paypal account or similar for payment.

People here are talking about how offering Turnips as pay is unfair, but y'all don't realize that Quis comes from Aywas and Aywas has been paying its artists exclusively in site currency for YEARS now due to their shoestring budget. Not surprised that the DV team would at least float the possibility of paying site currency, at least due to their experiences on other sites.

Pro-bono volunteer work for premium currency can indeed be attractive for short-term spits of art here and there. Personally, I would NEVER do stuff for site currency full-time, but I would absolutely dip my toes in if I have a big onsite goal I'm trying to meet in my free time.

...paying in turnips? Just as an FYI to all those applying, your art is worth more than online funny money. Best of luck to all applicants. I hope, desperately, that you get paid real, fair wages for your time.

"Other sites do it so it's okay" is not a convincing argument, sorry.
  • Villager zee (#36151) 21 Jul 2021, 9:52 pm
paying in turnips is sorta weird to me, but there's also the option to be payed in rlc so hopefully it isn't going to be a problem
otherwise i'm glad they're getting more people on board, i feel like a lot of the trouble the site has had can be attributed to them being understaffed
  • Villager vellum (#3634) 21 Jul 2021, 10:11 pm
"Artists will have the option of being paid in Turnips or RLC at market rates based on their preferences" okay yeahhhhhhhh i think i'm done with this website lol.
  • Villager Winry (#18550) 21 Jul 2021, 10:25 pm
I think people are skipping over the part where it says the artists have the OPTION to be paid in turnips if they want, if they want to be payed real money it does seem like that is also an option xD lawd have mercy.
  • Villager Honeebunny (#7072) 21 Jul 2021, 10:34 pm
Aside from the option of being paid in turnips, I personally find asking for a timezone questionable. Someone's timezone doesn't say much of anything about their availability. For example, it's 1:30 in the morning for me right now, and I'm winding down for the day. Anyone who expected to interact with me before noon my time would be bothering me before I'm properly functioning, and dealing with a seriously grumpy person. Asking for timezone instead of available hours feels like it could lead to discrimination based on location, either consciously or not.

Still, I wish the best of luck to all applying! I don't think that this is a bad company, just that perhaps that they should put a little more consideration into future applications.

A couple things that should be a addressed:

How many hours would these artists be working per week on a single project?
What would a regular offsite pay look like PER singular project?
And what would the artists get in exposure on DV? This should include a regular average.

All questions are important to address otherwise artists will be scared away without payment quotes of some kind as a lot of them are UNDERPAID or NEW.

Good luck to the artists applying.

Adding to my last comment but you should also consider the people who are in high school/collage and are applying for this as an extra payment sort of work. As a student myself I'd like to know if these hours are flexible around my schedule because I could possibly miss important meetings with the DV staff for upcoming projects and people such as this may be looking for ways to expand their work knowledge and get more hands on experience but have limited times that they cannot do so. So for the students, people in different timezones, OR other it's important to make a note that you're flexible for schedules and such.

RLC = real life currency, right?

I mean, I do think that artists should be paid actual money and not turnips, but if an artist is an avid player they might be interested in turnips more. But... y'know.
  • Villager Etherella (#51562) 22 Jul 2021, 1:51 am
I'm thinking of a site where a particularly successful adoptable has become a much bigger deal, with some pretty terrifying potential for RLC commissions as well as on site currency. The organisers of the said adoptable have a tier system of artist and their options for repayment are dependent on their artist grade. This is made clear at the time of applying and those on the highest RLC level have the hardest art commissions. Different from this, the RLC in that case is a pay as you work kind of deal, meaning that the money paid for the art goes to the artist entirely, but there is no standard pay rate or site/organiser cut as far as I can tell.

...I think DV probably needs to clarify which category their work is falling into, and whether there will be legally binding contractual obligations. I think timezone is probably relevant or at least location because of different international laws that might apply in the case of a formal offer of employment, whether part time or long term. Though the Turnip option makes me think it's maybe not at that level, it's still worth considering.

The two main differences in the site I'm thinking of is that the adoptable, while having its own site and such, piggybacks off the existing game site (with permission) and thus has no massive overheads of its own...and of course the site in question allows game currency to be sold for RLC, which DV does not.

Not that I think DV should have that option, but it's just food for thought.

I think more than the turnip v rlc discussion, the hours, expectations, flexibility and length of the artists being involved is important information. If someone knowingly goes into a project and chooses to be paid turnips that's their business, but going in not knowing hours, demands, responsibilities etc...is a bit more difficult.
