Hey there, looks like you just wandered in. Why not have a look around and stay for a while, maybe even start your own adventure, if you're into that.

Monthly Shop & Premium Changes!

Hello everyone, we are happy to be back with a major announcement regarding our plans and changes for the monthly shops and premium account upgrades! We sincerely apologize that we couldn't get this post out to you all sooner, as we needed time to discuss this matter with the team as well as to make sure the coding aspects of our decision would be possible in the backend. As always, thank you so much for your patience!

Originally, our vision was for the site to be a quaint dress-up style game with spinny gumball-type machines to get fun prizes from, as many of us had fond experiences and memories of these when we were younger. This concept was the inspiration behind all of our shops, including the monthly ones! When we released the very first test version of our Turnip monthly shop during beta testing, we got a lot of helpful feedback that eventually led us to make the following changes and additions to the feature during closed development:
  • Offered all Turnip monthly items in one set price box.
  • Allowed for future opportunities to obtain retired monthly items instead of retiring them permanently.
  • Lowered the spin price in Pai's shop, taking into account that turnips are based in CAD.
  • Extended the free item claim expiration limit to 3+ months.
  • Made spin points non-expiring.

Genuine effort was put into trying to find a happy balance of all of the suggestions we received during beta and our original vision for the feature. We had hoped that these changes would remove the harmful aspects of an RLC chance machine, particularly with the addition of the ability to buy a full set of Pai's items for a set price; however, we've read through and listened to all of your recent feedback and have realized that this was not enough. It was never our intention for Dappervolk to engage in harmful aspects of RLC chance machines, so we have decided that it is our moral responsibillity to remove the chance aspect of this feature.

Changes Going Forward
Starting on August 1st, 2020 players can expect to see the following changes to this feature:
  • "Pai's Machine of Wonders" will change to "Pai's Shop of Wonders"
  • Pai's chance machine will change into a permastock shop (all items at a set price with infinite stock for that month), with free claims and purchase points intact from June & July's records.
  • Each item in Pai's Shop from August onwards will cost 200 turnips and will be purchaseable individually.
  • "Spin Points" will be converted into "Turnips Spent" which will not expire; each spin point will convert into 180 Turnips Spent.
  • Users will be able to claim a free item after spending 2000 turnips in Pai's Shop.
  • Free item claims will still expire in 3 months and work the same way they do now.

Tied in with our Monthly Shop changes, we'd also like to add some additional upcoming perks to our Premium Badge that will be added from August 2020 onwards!
  • Since we're changing Spin Points into Turnips Spent, premium users will receive +600 Turnips Spent bonus per month in Pai's Shop of Wonders.
  • Premium users will be able to use a premium-only forum post border through the duration of their premium status.
  • Premium users will get +1 additional wardrobe save slot for a total of three additional saved outfits for premium users.

We will be posting the updated Premium Perks information into a thread in the Site Announcement forum, which will also be linked to from Agnes' Perpetual Shop.

I enjoyed the premium gacha system that was in place before, both in beta and now. I've played gacha games and other pet sties, and this is the first I actually felt good about rolling the dice on something - like the rest of the gacha in dappervolk, even if I didn't get the item I wanted, I could trade it on the market for the one I did want. Or I could sell it for the potatoes I needed for it.

I really don't understand why people are claiming that the previous system was horrible, illegal, and questionable. Everything about it was clearly outlined to work just as everything else does in the game, and honestly, it's probably the nicest gacha system I've ever played. You were GUARANTEED an item worth something! You had the choice of rolling for the item you wanted, or guaranteeing the full set! And if you are free to play, or just didnt want to spend money, it was easy to buy something off the market.

I'm sad to see that system go - I had a lot of fun rolling, and then trading for the items I specifically wanted. I'm not angry at the team for this decision, but I'm disappointed that fellow players thought lashing out at you guys was the right answer.

I've seen so much negativity towards the team lately and it felt like people were trying to force dappervolk into the mold of other, similar games and are going to continue to do so. I've appreciated the vision that Quislings and the rest of the team have been piecing together and showing us of the world of dappervolk, and am more than a little ticked off of how people are so quick to rip into a site that hasn't even been out a month. The dappervolk team has been incredibly quick to respond to the userbase, and be as transparent as possible with the small team they have and the amount of pressure they've been under from said userbase.

    Can't edit comments but:

The removal of the RLC gacha system is great. 10/10, thank you, it's illegal for a reason.

i’ll have to wait until august rolls around to really get a feel for the new system but i’m happy you guys listened! i’m much more excited and confident to support financially again. i do still wish we could directly buy potato items without going through a middleman but maybe this is for the best. we’ll see.

    thanks staff for the update!

I’m in the minority and preferred the old system but we’ll see how this goes.

Kinda wish we could have both a flat shop and a gacha for the turnip items - this way people who don't want to deal with RNG can get their items for a slightly higher price, while others can still do spins and get extras to trade/sell to potato players. The new system feels like it'll cause problems for people who don't buy turnips at all, if that makes sense?

Ik it's a long shot, but maybe it's something to keep in mind.

Really preferred the gacha shop overall as it felt very fair. I've been on sites with chance boxes/machines/gachas/what-have-you where it was extremely unbalanced and pretty much designed to make you spend more money to get that ONE rare item you really really wanted. This really didn't feel like that at all. I would like to see some rates for the premium gacha (I believe the drop rate for all items is the same? It would still be good to disclose it though) somewhere on the site, but it's actually really disheartening to hear the gacha option is going to be done away with completely...

I think having both is a good middle ground. Some others in the comments here have said the same thing and have probably said it better than I can, so it's nice to see I'm not the only one who feels this way at least.

Merlin (#181) (unsure if pings work in comments here but) With regards to "illegal", lootbox/gacha mechanics are, in fact, illegal in multiple countries, or have other big restrictions in the same way that gambling does. Having a premium gacha still made available to users from those countries was a legal risk.

THANK YOU STAFF! I really appreciate the changes and I'm so happy to see you're listening your players. I will gladly shop in Pai's Shop now! ^_^

I'm sure it was clear long before now, but there is no perfect system to game sites that will please every single user. There will always be a better way to do this or that in the eyes of someone else. That said, I also did not have a huge problem with the gacha due to it not having a rarity imbalance / actually having a resale value, which is the issue most gacha seem to have. (Rarity tiers with potato machines is fine since it is earned site currency; I don't see any problem there.) I did have an issue with a free spin/item being advertised and not delivered upon, but not enough to denounce everything entirely. I do think this was a wise decision, though, and appreciate that the changes were made.

Premium could use a few more features, but I think there will be opportunities for that as more site features in general open up. I'm waiting to renew until August but I already miss the extra town hop. The free item in general is no longer an issue to me because all premium items are flat rate, can be bought as a set, and can be picked a la carte.

Lots of us appreciate you listening and making changes, as you can see. It is a new site and these things are all learn as you go, even after beta, when different kinds of users flood the site and offer feedback on changes as they happen.

    Thank you!
