Being a pet sim veteran of over 4 years I can safely say the situation with the seasonal pet is a terrible way to encourage people to spend turnips, let alone stay on the site. Nobody should have to spend roughly $60 for a pet during normal pet sim gameplay (especially since unless you are diligent you are not getting turnips very quickly through other means). While yes I originally was disappointed that seasonal pets wasn't a thing from the beginning I originally expected if they did appear it would be a single purchase from one of the seasonal shops and not...this *gestures at the news post*. If staff want the site to not end up like Aywas in terms of daily activity in one tenth of the time (Aywas is over 10 years old) they really should consider how turnips are used in this game because they are getting very close to that possibility.
