Autumn Premium Shop Test & Other News!

Happy Autumn, Dappervolk!
As our last order of business during beta, we are releasing our
Monthly Turnip Chance Machine for testing and feedback!


Alongside the new shop, a new mini-town called Peddler's Port has appeared. This location is where our new NPC shop will reside and will become home to various other merchants in the future - including NPCs that will be selling monthly potato items, class-specific items, and more!

Visit the World Map and select the Peddler's Port icon to visit this new location.
Additionally, it will not cost you any town hops to visit this area.
You may also return to 
the town that you originally hopped from for free!


Because this update involves adding a new town to the site, we
will need to go offline for maintenance for a short period of time
to implement the new content.


  • In the spirit of autumn, all of the test items that we're using are an autumn-y witch/warlock theme!
  • These items will be repurposed into seasonally obtainable items during official launch, so everyone will have a chance to obtain them again in the future.
  • Bonus Prizes: For every 10 spins in this shop, the shopkeeper will reward you with a free bonus item of your choice from that month's shop stock! This should help reward collectors and give players a bit of control over the unpredictable nature of the turnip chance machine.
  • When the site officially launches, the turnip chance machine's stock will renew each month, with the previous months' items permanently retiring. This type of retiring system will only apply to items that are "limited" rarity.

  • Dappervolk's cash-based currency is the Turnip, which is displayed next to your potato count on the top bar - not to be confused with the item called Plump Turnip.
  • Turnip currency is not transferable between users, however items obtained using Turnips can be traded and sold freely.
  • There will be 2 main ways to obtain Turnip currency on Dappervolk: Purchasing it through the site for real-world currency, and participating in in-game activities that will give out small amounts of it over time.
  • You will be able to purchase Turnips starting in Official Launch, where we estimate that 100 Turnips will cost roughly $1 CAD.
  • We also intend to launch with free ways to earn Turnips, such as through daily login bonuses, opt-in ad viewing, and NPC affection milestones!




All users who registered and verified their account during beta will receive a Prismatic Bell item during official launch, which will hatch into a Prismatic Pup! Like the Celestial Pup that alpha testers were rewarded, this pet is a beta-exclusive quaint that will be retired permanently.


All verified beta accounts will also receive an exclusive beta tester achievement to display on their forum posts! The achievement icon isn't ready for release yet, but it will be unveiled in a future announcement.

As a note: verified means that your account's email must be verified in order to qualify.

After the beta testing period ends on October 25th, 2018, Dappervolk will be going into a period of Closed Development to focus on reviewing tester feedback, updating/revamping existing features, and continuing development on new features to prepare for official launch.

In the last few days of beta, we'll be posting an important news post with more information on what our upcoming development plans are, as well as some rough estimates for official launch.

    I wonder if instead of a month, it could be two months before it retires? Or one and a half.. Personally I'm completely fine with it only staying a month, I'll be excited to get new items each month!
    This is a very long shot, but perhaps, in the months where there are almost no holidays (February, April, May, August, September, there could perhaps be items from the chance machines of that year (well for February possibly the previous year)? But instead of 200, possibly 250 or 300, this is probably a bad idea, but I could imagine something along the lines of it.
    Also that Prismatic Pup is amazing and I cannot wait to get it!

    Francis (#14189) I believe if you reach max affection with an NPC you get awarded 500 turnips (correct me if I'm wrong, I heard that somewhere) And there were some available as a reward in the spring event!

    Yes, people can choose to sell their premium items for Potatoes but they can also choose to trade it for another petsite's currency or items, or for art, etc.

    Cello (#1661) I think the premium currency not being tradeable, won't make it harder to get the items with, say, potatoes! People who don't have time to play the game as some do, but do have money, could be trying to sell their extra premium stuff for potatoes!

    Or I least, I think that's what the intention is. I hope it works out this way.

    I agree with the other on the issues of gambling with premium currency and items retiring after only one month. One month feels like a short time to me. I dislike loot boxes and this is no different than loot boxes.

    Premium currency being not tradeable between users is also very off-putting to me. I'm one of those players who can't afford spending $20+ on the site every month. There wouldn't be a way to get my hands on the premium items if nobody is selling the items during that period or almost none at all. Yes, there are the free ways to earn Turnips but I assume there's a limit on how much Turnips you can earn with it, the amount would not be a lot obviously.

    other people have likely said about the Concerns with premium gambling and the issue of retiring random chance items, and the issue with not being able to buy currency from other players, so I won't mention those again.

    But I do wanna at least mention - why do the free items not carry over per month? At first I though it'd be a nice reward for continued support - pay a few dollars every month, and then in the future, when there's a set you ADORE and really want to grab, you can use your free item to grab it.

    But the current setup means you only get the free item if you use it that month? This doesn't help players with lower income - this exclusively helps people who can spend $20+ on the site a month. ESPECIALLY since premium currency isn't tradeable.

    I personally won't be buying any premium currency myself, since I'd rather spend it on other sites where I can choose what I get. But at the very least, make the free item carry over between months, for people who can only afford to spend a couple of dollars a month on the site.

    As others, I think making the items cycle back - or maybe making recoloured versions cycle back instead - would prevent extreme inflation. I get that some people consider extreme inflation part of the game, but really, with this many items unreachable (5-7 every month), it just becomes extremely frustrating.

    Also, I do think it'd be an idea to research gambling laws for real USD currency, if there's as big problems as mentioned earlier in this thread. It wouldn't hurt you as a site to not have the premium items as gacha-items.
    But sound like it might end up creating problems in the long run if they are.

    Strong agreement with the other comments.
    I'm familiar with gacha-style distribution of items on avatar sites and with items being permanentally retired - however I am only familiar with it with several other conditions being present:
    - Also having a non-RNG monthly item (usually for 2 USD)
    - The RNG monthly item being cheaper than the non-RNG one (around 1 USD)
    - The items including several poses out of which only either one per item in possession or all can be worn based on the site
    - The real money currency being sellable to other players.

    With all this not being present, it sounds like a setup to being frustrating in that one has to spend at least 12 USD on a set per month or likely more and other players can only obtain the doubles, rather than being able to buy the currency from other players to make their own luck with.

    Like Gaia, I'm also not against retiring items (permatentally or with controlled limited availability later) in general. I think that with the items rising in value over time, the investment of real money becomes more justified as a long term investment into the site.
    I think having them solely dstributed on chance and not having the currency sellable (so people who donate have to spin on the chance of getting a less popular item, rather than being able to make a "safe" sell of currency) are much greater dealbreakers to me.

    That being said, how does one currently get turnips to test this feature?

    I think this is a good way for DV to still be fun and earn some extra cash to keep the site running. I, however, do agree with things permanently retiring each month being a bad thing. It would be much better if they were available for at least 2-3 months or even return one day again, before they retire permanently.

    I would also like a little preview for these premium items. As they cost real money, it would be a good thing for people to be able to check if they fit on their avatar's base before they actually spin the machine. Maybe the shop could have a little feature where an avatar could 'try on the items', like we can in real, when we are buying new clothes.

    Anyways, thanks for the update and the new things, I'm really excited for DV to finally launch and see where it ends up. Keep up the good work! <3

    Considering the legal trouble video games are starting to find themselves in for paid loot boxes being classed as illegal gambling, I'd personally recommend against introducing premium items you can only gain through random chance.
    I know it fits the site's other mechanics, but just for premium items I would personally recommend allowing people to buy things straight up. Or maybe you could have both? A chance machine that's one price, and parts of the set available for direct purchase priced a little higher according to individual rarity?

    I have to echo what a lot of people have already said. Permanently retiring a set of items each month that is only available via premium currency is not a good idea. I don't mind the idea of retiring* items because we need some scarcity, but each month and premium currency exclusive? No, thank you!

    It will turn this game into a pay-to-win after all, and it would deter me and many others from playing this game altogether.

    Please do not permanently retire items. At least make them obtainable in events or the shops will restock/randomize items periodically, but permanently retiring items is a stretch too far given how unpredictable the nature is of gacha shops. A lot of games have pulled this before, and it only frustrates players. Please give this a second thought. Yes, the rest is fine, but permanently retiring would not appease a lot of the players.
